WATERMELON
Five thousand years ago
A watermelon born
First harvest in Egypt
Almost a “veggie” just like corn.
All the way from Africa
Traveled far and wide,
“Citrullus Lanatus”
Is now Oklahoma’s state Pride.
Every part is edible
This round ole’ smooth like fruit,
Ninety-two percent water
With lycopene to boot!
Some with seeds and some without,
The meat is crisp and sweet,
Seed spit contest in July,
Quite an incredible feat!
Forty-nine states grow watermelon
In the USA,
A summer favorite that’s for sure,
When the kids come out to play…
Red juicy drips and juicy lips
A tasty treat to eat,
WE LOVE COLD WATERMELON
Especially in the heat!
Dictionary did welcome
The “watermelon” word,
In 1615 made “watermelon”
A noun and not a verb.
Yellow, red, orange, pink,
Healthy, bright, and often round,
Carve it, slice it, cube it, dice it,
Watermelon’s abound!
There is a special secret
That most of you don’t know
High in California Mountains
Lives watermelon scented pink SNOW!
Now a National Watermelon Month
Voted Congress on the bill,
Please just place it on your plate
In JULY if you will.
We celebrate and educate
This fabulous fancy fruit,
Now let’s TOAST the FARMERS
Who harvest our produce!
